Part of the task list that had been assigned to Janssen by Spencer, before he left for New York, was dropping by to check on Missy and Chasâ adopted daughter, Kaylee, at least twice a day while she was with Mattie, the nanny, and once in the middle of the night, while she slept peacefully in Echo and Kelâs guest room. He and Mattie had become good friends a few months earlier, so he usually tried to drop by around lunchtime so that they could eat and chat. They were an unlikely pair of friends who accepted each other unconditionally.
âWow, Spencer is avoiding me, so he sends you to check on us?â Matisse remarked, when Janssen wandered into Missyâs kitchen.
âWhat would make you think that?â he frowned, lifting the lid of a pot of food on the stove.
âThe spaghetti is almost ready, if you want to hang out and have some,â Mattie commented. âHis old girlfriend is in town. The second he saw her, he dropped everything to be with her, and I havenât seen him since,â she explained, her tone bitter.
âHas he tried to see you?â Janssen raised an eyebrow, knowing the reality of the situation, but not about to give Izzyâs hiding place away.
âWellâ¦I mean, heâs texted a couple of times. And he came here at lunch once or twice and I avoided him, but he couldâve tried harder,â she frowned.
âSo youâre playing games with him, hoping heâll redeem himself, rather than being honest with him about how youâre feeling?â Janssen challenged.
âDonât judge me. I thought you of all people would understand,â Matisse shook her head.
âI do understand. That doesnât mean that itâs the right way to handle things,â he pointed out. âLifeâs too short to play those kinds of games. Just tell him how you feel and give him a chance to respond,â he suggested, snagging a spaghetti noodle from the pot and slurping it into his mouth.
âYouâre awfully philosophical today,â Mattie arched an eyebrow at him. âWhatâs gotten into you?â her eyes narrowed suspiciously.
âIâve done a lot of dumb things in my life, and sometimes it just takes the right kind of wakeup call to bring everything back into focus,â he shrugged.
Mattie paused, staring at him.
âDid you work things out with your wife?â she asked, her expression softening.
âNo, I think that ship has sailed,â Janssen sighed. âIâve just been doing some thinking and working through some things. Seems like I might be able to get back to normal life someday, who knows?â he smiled wryly.
âGood,â Mattie nodded, smiling for the first time since her friend had entered the kitchen. âIâm happy for you.â
âMake things right with Spence, so that I can be happy for you,â he advised, grabbing a plate.
