Part of the task list that had been assigned to Janssen by Spencer, before he left for New York, was dropping by to check on Missy and Chas’ adopted daughter, Kaylee, at least twice a day while she was with Mattie, the nanny, and once in the middle of the night, while she slept peacefully in Echo and Kel’s guest room. He and Mattie had become good friends a few months earlier, so he usually tried to drop by around lunchtime so that they could eat and chat. They were an unlikely pair of friends who accepted each other unconditionally.

“Wow, Spencer is avoiding me, so he sends you to check on us?” Matisse remarked, when Janssen wandered into Missy’s kitchen.

“What would make you think that?” he frowned, lifting the lid of a pot of food on the stove.

“The spaghetti is almost ready, if you want to hang out and have some,” Mattie commented. “His old girlfriend is in town. The second he saw her, he dropped everything to be with her, and I haven’t seen him since,” she explained, her tone bitter.

“Has he tried to see you?” Janssen raised an eyebrow, knowing the reality of the situation, but not about to give Izzy’s hiding place away.

“Well…I mean, he’s texted a couple of times. And he came here at lunch once or twice and I avoided him, but he could’ve tried harder,” she frowned.

“So you’re playing games with him, hoping he’ll redeem himself, rather than being honest with him about how you’re feeling?” Janssen challenged.

“Don’t judge me. I thought you of all people would understand,” Matisse shook her head.

“I do understand. That doesn’t mean that it’s the right way to handle things,” he pointed out. “Life’s too short to play those kinds of games. Just tell him how you feel and give him a chance to respond,” he suggested, snagging a spaghetti noodle from the pot and slurping it into his mouth.

“You’re awfully philosophical today,” Mattie arched an eyebrow at him. “What’s gotten into you?” her eyes narrowed suspiciously.

“I’ve done a lot of dumb things in my life, and sometimes it just takes the right kind of wakeup call to bring everything back into focus,” he shrugged.

Mattie paused, staring at him.

“Did you work things out with your wife?” she asked, her expression softening.

“No, I think that ship has sailed,” Janssen sighed. “I’ve just been doing some thinking and working through some things. Seems like I might be able to get back to normal life someday, who knows?” he smiled wryly.

“Good,” Mattie nodded, smiling for the first time since her friend had entered the kitchen. “I’m happy for you.”

“Make things right with Spence, so that I can be happy for you,” he advised, grabbing a plate.
